The ROI on being Awesome!

Life can get hectic. Finding time to accomplish everything we want to get done in 24 hours sometimes feels like climbing Mt Everest. This morning while at the gym on the treadmill I turned on a podcast by Scott Stratten. (Thanks John) for the link. I figured if I had 30 minutes of cardio, I could also knock out 30 minutes of marketing motivation. Sometimes the only way to get things done is to make them a priority even if that means doing several things at once.

The bad part about multi tasking is that is can lead to injury :-) I had three Ah Ha moments while on the treadmill that almost caused some embarrassing gym moments.

One line In particular stood out above the rest. There is a substantial ROI ( return on investment) in being awesome. Long story short… Invest in making yourself an awesome person, training your staff to be awesome, and surround yourself with other awesome people.

He gave an example how he trolled the mall one Tuesday afternoon walking in stores in hopes of finding a retail business and staff that welcomed his business. He entered 21 stores, and on the 22nd store the attendant welcomed him, gave him a tour, and he was so impressed he ended up spending $80 on soap he would never use.

If you own a business, or you ARE your business you need to be investing in being and training awesome.

An awesome person in relation to business means, understanding customers needs and wants, listening to customers needs and wants without making them feel bad, offering compliments, a dedication to doing a great job by all means, being less reactive and more proactive, and having a goal to leave a smile where ever you go.

I remember being 15 years old and working a 12 hour shift at Chuckie. Cheese. I loved my job so much that I would come in early, stay late, clean the tables, and salad bar, and they could depend on me. Within a month I was employee of the month and I remember my manager telling me I will go far in life because I have an awesome way with people.

Marketing isn’t a job, or a task, it is a verb. It is the act of making friends, keeping relationships alive, listening, reciprocating, and practicing being awesome.

In my business courses we talk a lot about ROI. And there are simple to complex formulas for measuring ROI. But when it comes to marketing and social impact and measuring ROI it’s not as easy because the results aren’t always as fast and easy as reading google analytics. But you will see the results when you hear about a referall, when you receive good feedback, and when you place emphasis on building good relationships with clients.

Great painters don’t always make great instructors. When I am searching for instructors for FABAIC and FABATV I look for artists that constantly share, answer questions, don’t complain about others being Inspired by their art. Basically I am looking for awesome potential instructors. When I am hiring at Silly Farm I am looking for awesome potential farmers. I am looking for someone that smiles, with passion to help, and cares about the quality of their work.

If you are a one man show then this message is for you more than anyone else. If you want more business, if you want to grow your business, then you should be practicing everyday how to be awesome. Start at the grocery store, compliment three people a day, start a conversation with a stranger and just LISTEN. In business you are going to have days where your customers just want to talk, and you need to be a good listener. Complement three posts on Facebook. All of those practices are preparing you to make them daily habits to being an awesome person. Don’t underestimate the way you make someone feel. People might forget what you say , but they don’t forget the way you made them feel.

Scott Strattens occasion raised a bunch if great points that I can’t wait to share. I want to avoid rambling and boring you all so I will be filming a PMG tomorrow to switch it up a bit and share a little more. In the meantime if you want a good read check out his latest book Unmarketing.

Wishing everyone an awesome day. And I’d LOVE to hear about ways you practice being awesome on the daily. We can all learn from each other :)
