Look Good… Feel Good On the Job

Look Good and Feel Good while you Paint by Heather Green

Looking good and painting good. Teretha Johnson brings the party with her as she dons a fancy eye design

When I began my face painting journey, the only people painting were clowns. Marcela bought me my first Mooseburger original and I remember putting on this triple lined gorgeous costume and thinking I am gonna faint. I live in sunny, hot, humid South Florida and a heavy clown costume was going to be the death of me.

I was also never truly comfortable as a clown so I was always looking for some sort of uniform that said “Im a face painter” and was comfortable and professional looking.  I always feared that if I were plain clothes that guests would not know my purpose of being at the event. I always paint my own face when I am working at an event. I believe the customers will be impressed and it will give them ideas if they like my own design. Over the years I have been super fortunate to be invited to paint with painters around the globe and its always interesting to see what they wear on the job.

Marcy and her famous checkerboard looks

My good friend, Margi Kanter of Making Faces Chicago, invites me to paint with her every year and the first year I showed up with a beret and bling shirt and rushed to paint my face and I waled out of the bathroom and there Margi was so cute and shabby chic. I asked her if she painted like that and she said YES! Margi looks and feels her best when she is in her comfort zone and her eclectic style makes her feel great and that works for her.

My aunt and first teacher, Marcela started off her face painting career as a clown so she always like to look like the life of the party. She has a different outfit, apron, costume for every theme and day of the week. But her signature checkerboard happy style makes her, feel her best and thus produce  your best work. I am a firm believer that when you look good you feel GREAT!

When choosing what to wear on your jobs its important to know your clientele. I work at a lot of country clubs and high end events and sometimes my purple sequin beret doesn’t always fit the gig. So I make sure I have a nice professional uniform that makes sure I fit in and look like a professional my clients wanted to hire. Remember, customers are paying good money for our services, your appearance should match your fee.

One color to avoid while on the job is WHITE. I have been hired to paint at all white events and I dread them. Who wants to paint wearing all white, its a disaster waiting to happen. But if the client asks for an all white painter or a pirate painter I always look to oblige because it makes my customers happy.

We still very much live in a day and age where we are judged by our appearances so its important that if you want to be taken seriously and command top dollar you need to invest in looking the part.
